Our exciting journey toward becoming the only Leader in Me Lighthouse School in Romania started in September 2015. It’s going to be a 3-year process, and we are thrilled to see that the parents, teachers and students already appreciate the benefits of implementing the programme, one year after it’s launch.
The “Leader in Me” process is based on “Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”, initially created for professionals. Seeing that the benefits are easily translated to the field of education, for children of all ages, from kindergarten to teenagers, the programme has been beautifully developed into a process that leads each individual on the path of mastering personal leadership. The programme is a paradigm changer and enables students to make better life choices and to be prepared for a job market that is continuously evolving and changing.
The implementation process involves extensive training sessions with a Franklyn Covey certified trainer. At Transylvania College, the trainer has met with teachers and staff, students and their parents, in order to make sure that the entire community speaks the same language when it comes to “Leader in Me.” And, also, that we all walk the talk. It’s been amazing to see how easily have the children have embraced “the 7 Habits.” Being proactive, beginning with the end in mind, putting first things first, thinking win-win, seeking first to understand than to be understood, synergizing, or sharpening the saw all become second nature to our youngest learners, who obviously don’t have the same paradigms as adults. They learn intuitively, with contagious enthusiasm and their parents are amazed by the impact that the programme has had, in such a short time.
At Transylvania College, we promote a leadership culture, where students are actively engaged and take ownership of their own learning. The students, together with their teachers, set their learning objectives and track their own progress. All the students become active participants in the development of the school.
The leadership culture creates a setting where every student can find his or her spark. It encourages exploration, critical thinking, project-based learning and experimentation within a safe, secure environment.
Transylvania College’s mission is to help our students find their own voice, to make a difference and to discover their spark. From our experience, once this happens, the students are inspired and motivated to learn and to make the right choices for their personal and professional success.
“Now, if we plan to do something and change things along the way, my 6-year-old son would tell me that we should remember our initial goal because we’re supposed to ‘begin with the end if mind’. In other words, make a plan and stick with it to get results.”
“Our 8-year-old is now able to present his point of view while also listening to others’ perspective on the issue. Seek first to understand than to be understood is a habit that has even helped us, as adults, in our personal and professional lives.”
“We’ve noticed that our 11-year-old daughter is now eager to be involved in the family’s decision-making process, helping us to ‘be proactive’ and ‘do first things first’. It’s nice to have a common language with her and the school, and it’s wonderful to see such quick progress in personal discipline, independence and responsibility.”
The Leader in Me is Franklin Covey’s whole school transformation process. It teaches 21st-century leadership and life skills to students and creates a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader. The Leader in Me is spreading and is now in over 2,500 schools in 25 countries. Transylvania College is the first school in Romania to implement the programme.
